After a strong T3 finish at last weeks Invesco QQQ Championship, Stephen Ames qualified for the season finale as one of the top 36 players on the Champions Tour. Ames started the tournament in 43rd in the Charles Schwab Cup standings and was boosted by a solid finish to sit in 34th.
The final Champions Tour tournament takes place at Phoenix Country Club with a purse of 2.5 million and double the points on the line. While Ames likely does not have a chance at the Charles Schwab Cup he can certainly contend in an event that features the second highest prize money of the year.
Ames is coming off a hot finish at the Invesco QQQ Championship where he sat in second heading into the final round before firing a final round 71. Scott Parel won the event after shooting a final round 68. This vaulted Parel into second place in the standings as he contends with Senior Tour legend Bernhard Langer, among others for the trophy.
Ames has had a solid season on the Champions Tour as this tied with his T3 at the Senior Open Championship for his best finish on the season.
